  How to choose the steel shot  according to the hardness?

  For the hardness of steel shot use in subsequent shot peening ,  some require as 40 ~ 50HRC (GB), and some require as 46 ~ 55HRC, while others require Shot hardness greater than 58HRC, what that choice is based on the hardness?

  For example, peening carburizing parts. The surface hardness Carburizing parts is generally 58 ~ 63HRC, So the  peening materials hardness for  shot peening should be almost the same or slightly harderand compare with hardness of the workpiece . From the coverage is concerned, low hardness is difficult to obtain 100% coverage. In terms of strength, with steel shot (45-50HRC )  ,  the surface of carburizing artifacts are almost do not see any change, much less residual stress curve. If  use steel shot (58HRC ),  the pattern on workpiece has played after shopt peening. This is only superficial, the final test results should be residual stress values.

  So the hardness of steel shot is very import and affect the quality .The low hardness are fragile or loose, thus affecting the results, high hardness and density of steel shot can be improved in a peening process.
